First held in 1999, the Pingxi festival was named by Discovery Channel in 2008 as the world's second-largest carnival across the globe to a little mountain town of Pingxi in Taiwan.
Every Chinese New Year from mid- January to mid-February depending on the lunar calendar, thousands of tourists from all corners of the world catch flights to Taiwan to descend upon Pingxi, a small town nestled among the mountains in northeastern Taipei to celebrate this colorful festival.
During this festival, thousand of paper lanterns will light up the skies on February 14, 17, and 24. The first two days are during the Lunar New Year holiday , which runs from 9th February 2013 to February 17th 2013, while on the last day is the actual Lantern Festival , which takes place on the 15th day of the first month on lunar calendar.
Various stalls selling paper lanterns, miniature toy lanterns, food and firework line the streets and at night, thousands of lanterns are simultaneously launched from a school field. Before launching the lanterns, people can pick the lantern color and write their wishes on them as it is believed that these wishes are sent to heaven and bring luck in the New Year.
