Located on the north island of New Zealand, the Auckland Metropolitan area is the largest and most populous urban area in the country. Located within this region is the Auckland City which is blessed by both, man-made as well as natural beauty. The main part of the Auckland City is connected with the rest of the greater area at both ends which are considerably narrow. Many of the Hauraki islands are also a part of the city. These geographical factors make the city a bit more fascinating. However, things that really grab the attention of the visitors are within the city. Auckland is known as the 'City of Sails' because of its inhabitants' passion for boats. On fine summer days the Hauraki Gulf is covered with sailing boats. Statistics show that one household in four owns a boat.

Located, relatively elevated, within Auckland is the Auckland Museum and Institute. Built in 1929, this neo-classical structure stands as a tribute to New Zealand’s soldiers that died in the First World War. Within is the war memorial which commemorates all the wars fought by the armed forces of New Zealand. Other than that, the museum is rich with collections of items natural and cultural historical importance. The first floor is strictly dedicated to geology, natural history and the seafaring history of New Zealand.

On the south side of the city is a 196 meter high volcanic cone, known as Mount Eden, which provides incredible views of the surrounding vicinity from a fine stature. Close by is the Eden Garden which is known for its beautiful greenery and tranquil atmosphere. Further to the south is another volcanic cone known as the One Tree Hill. Standing at 183 meters, this is yet another perfect place for remarkable views of the surrounding areas from a vantage point. The hill’s name comes from an old sacred totara tree that once stood at the top of the hill. One the summit of the hill is a tall obelisk that is visible from a distance. The obelisk stands on top of Sir John Logan Campbell’s grave who bequeathed £5000 for the building of the structure as a memorial to the Maori.

Kelly Tarlton’s Underwater World is a popular tourist attraction located in the Orakei district. Visitors walk through acrylic tunnels within huge tanks of water where they can observe a variety of fish of all kinds, including sharks and rays. There is also a display devoted to Kelly Tarlton; a marine life enthusiast who dedicated his life to studying the marine life and underwater exploration. There is also a section of Antarctic Encounter where tourists can actually encounter a colony of penguins.

The Coromandel Peninsula combines beautiful beaches and stunning coastlines with lush forests and a dramatic mountain range. This is heaven for those who like to take walks or hike through dense forests and scenic beauty. There are several spots on the coastline where you can dive into the clear blue waters, snorkel or just lie back on the beach sand. There are a number of historical attractions nearby as well, including fortified Maori villages, gold mining relics and Kauri timber mining remains. These can provide tourists with a complete day of enjoyment and relaxation – fulfilling the original purpose of a vacation.
