If you are visiting the south coast of England one place not to be missed is Poole in Dorset. Poole boasts the world’s second largest natural harbour, many miles of sandy beaches and a host of attractions to please the whole family. You can see a lot in a day but to experience everything the town has to offer you may need to linger a little longer!
Sun and Sand
If the sun is out, Poole is a great place to enjoy the fun of the seaside. The nearby Blue Flag awarded beaches of Sandbanks and Studland Bay offer miles of golden sand with glorious views. These are amongst the best and most celebrated beaches in the country and should not be missed. If you are unlucky enough to visit in bad weather you can still have fun in the water at the Splashdown indoor water park.
Out and About
Just a short distance from Poole you will find several major visitor attractions to enjoy. Car enthusiasts will love the motor museum at Beaulieu and kids are always fascinated by the enormous military vehicles at the Bovington Tank Museum. If a more peaceful day is order try the stunning gardens of Compton Acres and history buffs will love Corfe Castle. On the outskirts of the town you will find Poole Park, a large recreation area for all the family with a boating lake, adventure playground, crazy golf and mini pitch and put.
Poole Quay
The jewel in the Poole crown is the Quay area with its many shops, restaurants, bars and attractions. Try some of the local fish and chips or savour some cockles and muscles before taking a stroll along the harbour’s edge. You can admire the luxury yachts moored in the marina or take to the water yourself on one of the many pleasure trips available. A ride out to Brownsea Island is particularly enjoyable. Brownsea is a nature reserve and the home of the scouting movement.
Back on the Quay the Poole Pottery Studio should not be missed. The pottery is admired worldwide for its unique style and bold designs and here you can purchase a piece to take home, stroll around the shop and watch master potters at work. If you are feeling artistic you can even take the opportunity to decorate you own unique piece in the studio before enjoying the rest of the Quay.
There are many interesting shops in the area where you can purchase seaside souvenirs, fine art, antiques and nautical gifts and if you are enjoying your visit to Poole check out the Waterfront Museum to gain insight into the colourful history of the town. It is well worth trying out the self-guided Cockle Trail to see many points of interest along the quay and in the old town and to learn about historical events, ghosts and pirates as you go.
Great Destination
There are many reasons to visit Poole and once you are there you will find more! Whether you are looking for great beaches, beautiful scenery, fine shopping or a bit of history Poole has it all and then some.
Sally Stacey is a keen blogger and frequent visitor to Poole but is completely rubbish at painting the pottery!
