Etihad Airways, the flag carrier of UAE is planning to launch flights to Hong Kong, a senior executive of the airline has said. The airline is considering launching flights on Abu Dhabi- Hong Kong route in the medium term, which is supposed to be 3 years.
The announcement was made after Air Seychelles commenced operations on Hong Kong-Mahé route via Abu Dhabi in the last week of March. Etihad has 40 percent ownership in Air Seychelles. Etihad airways and Air Seychelles has a codeshare agreement that enables both the airlines to book tickets for each other.
With equity interest and codeshare agreement with Air Seychelles Etihahd earns revenue from the Hong Kong despite not operating its own flights on Abu Dhabi-Hong Kong routes.
Here it is worth noting that Etihad is one of the designated carriers enjoying traffic rights for Hong Kong- UAE route that means airline has right to operate any number of passenger and freighter flights on this route.
Presently Etihad is running passenger flights to, Shanghai, Beijing and Chengdu and cargo flights on Abu Dhabi- Hong Kong route.
