Qatar Airways will make Philadelphia its newest U.S. gateway. The carrier gave few details in its morning tweet, saying that it planned to begin nonstop flights to Philadelphia on Boeing 777 aircraft.
In the words of Qatar Airway’s CEO Akbar Al-Baker, who is speaking at the opening day of a regional travel exhibition in Dubai, the route to Philadelphia would begin in March. He had previously indicated that Qatar Airways’ next U.S city would be one of three cities: Atlanta, Boston or Detroit, but Philadelphia apparently rose above those destinations.
Qatar Airways and US Airways also are already in a codeshare pact, which allows them to sell connecting seats on each other’s flights and offer reciprocal frequent-flier benefits.
Philadelphia would be Qatar Airway’s fifth destination in the United States and is sixth in North America. Qatar Airways began flying services to Chicago just last month, and also flies to Houston Bush Intercontinental, Montreal, New York, JFK, and Washington Dulles.
Also via twitter, Qatar Airways adds that it plans to begin new services between Doha and Ethiopian Capital Addis Ababa.
