Odisha, which is located in eastern India, has many sites of cultural interest, as well as areas of natural beauty. Odisha has a population of nearly 42 million people but despite the fact that is a busy hub of life and activity, this region is also hosts a wealth of history and wide life. Many of Odisha’s most impressive attractions are scattered along its coast line - a setting which only adds to the impressive beauty of the many ancient architectural structures. Odisha belongs to the ancient Kingdom of Kalinga and therefore dates back to 1200BC. The main architectural tourist attractions can be found on the eastern side Odisha but if you head West to the less economically well of region you can experience stunning natural beauty and amazing wildlife inland.
Konarak Sun Temple
This temple was built in the 13th century by King Narasimhadeva of the eastern Ganga Dynasty. It is a World Heritage Site, and has been classed as one of the seven wonders of India. As well as the impressive architecture, visitors may also see some local wildlife. The temple is a particularly spectacular sight at sunset.
Satkosia Tiger Reserve
This wildlife sanctuary, which is spread over four districts, is considered to have one of the best ecosystems in India. Other animals within the reserve include elephants, leopards, deer and crocodiles.
Odisha State Museum
The Odisha State Museum is the place to visit for anyone who wants to learn about Odisha history and culture. The museum has various galleries which include archaeology, art and crafts and natural history.
Udayagiri Caves
These caves are considered to be among the greatest historical monuments in the area. Although some of the caves are natural, most were carved out of the rocks by Jain monks during the reign of King Kharavela. There are eighteen caves in total, which contain some interesting sculptures and carvings.
Raghurajpur
Raghurajpur is an attractive village which is surrounded by coconut, palm and mango trees. It is well known as an arts and crafts village, with around three hundred artisans living there. They can be seen working outside the thatched huts, making items such as stone carvings, wooden toys and Pattachitra paintings. Visitors may also see some folk dancing.
Dhabaleshwar Island
This is a small island on the Mahanadi River. One of the main attractions is the ancient Shiva temple, which has sculptures dating back to the 11th century. There is also an attractive beach, where visitors can enjoy surfing and sailing.
Museum of Tribal Arts and Artefacts
This museum was established to promote and protect the tribal culture of the area. There are displays of tribal weaponry, clothing and jewellery. The items displayed are from the Lanjia Saora, Lanthal and Bonda tribes. There is no entry fee for this museum, so it is a free attraction.
Mukteswara Temple
The temple, which was built in the 10th century, has some beautiful sculptures and ornate carvings. One of the highlights is the decorative gateway. There is also an attractive garden with a fish pond.
