Camping is a popular way to get out into the great outdoors and get some fresh air in your lungs. However, camping can go sour quickly if you’re not properly prepared. There’s a lot more to it than a tent and a sleeping bag! Here is a guide on how to properly prepare for a camping trip and what you will need to bring.
Where to go:
Research some campsites in your local area or a familiar you’re familiar with. If you’ve been camping before it’ll be reassuring to know that home isn’t too far away. Whether you’re familiar or unfamiliar with the area, always bring a map, compass or GPS. You may have to book in advance depending on the season so don’t forget to bring any booking information you might need.
Shelter and bedding
It’s not just a tent that you’ll need to bring with you! For extra comfort and protection bring a tarp for the group on the inside of your tent and a dustpan and brush to help keep things tidy. While a sleeping bag is always comfortable to sleep in, consider an air mattress or sleeping pad for added comfort.
Safety
Never underestimate the usefulness of a good torch when you’re camping. Not only does is help you to navigate through dark areas, if you get into trouble it can also help others to find you! Always bring a well-stocked first aid kit with you as well, you can buy one from most camping stores or put one together yourself! Just be sure any supplies are in a strong water proof case and are well organised.
Food
It’s not just marshmallows over a campfire anymore! Cooking while camping is no different than when you’re cooking at home, you just need to be prepared. A propane stove is a good device to start with, as well as disposable BBQ. You’ll also need fire starters and matches or a lighter. Don’t forget utensils like tongs, spatulas, knives, forks as well as plates, bowls, pots and pans. You’re also going to need cleaning supplies like a scrubbing brush, dish towels and soap for after dinner! Most importantly always ensure you have a clean water source available to you.
Clothing
A good pair of shoes is vital when camping because you’ll be spending a lot of time walking and on your feet, extra socks will be a must, especially if you’re prone to blisters. Durable light layers are the best way to go and always have some form of waterproof protection just in case the weather takes a turn for the worst!
Extras
To ensure your comfort and safety there are a few smaller items you’ll need to bring. A good bug repellent, sunscreen, extra batteries for your torch, a whistle for attracting attention, rope, a pocket knife, hand wipes, a small shovel and more! Ask friends who’ve been camping and local camping stores what they’d recommend to bring.
