Set in the Straits of Johor, Singapore is a shining island city state. Its growth has been swift and dramatic, built on trade on the sea routes to South-East Asia. The British arrived in the early 19th century and Sir Stamford Thomas Raffles is still celebrated as the founder of modern Singapore.
Here are five suggestions as you begin to explore Singapore. It’s been a cultural melting pot for centuries and now is one of the richest republics in the economic powerhouse of its region.
1 - Universal Studios Singapore
The power of the Asian economy and the thirst of eastern fans for Western culture has brought one of the biggest names in world tourism to Singapore’s shores. This is just part of the massive Sentosa resort, a shiny, new tourist paradise. The Universal Studios is divided into seven zones celebrating the studio’s biggest family hits as well as world history and Hollywood and New York.

2 - Singapore Zoo
The growth of the city has denuded the island of Singapore of much of its natural beauty, and Singapore Zoo is one of the last places you can celebrate the local flora and fauna. It’s packed with rare animals and great for kids, with a Rainforest Kidzworld and a water park. A Night Safari is a bit more sophisticated and calming.

Singapore’s answer to the London Eye reflects changing economic times by dwarfing the original at 165 metres high.
